Descendant of Sir Edward Burne Jones makes monster sculptures
Creeping into the Garden of Worthing Museum and Art Gallery this month are strange metal mythical creatures and monsters made by Sussex based artist Serena Thirkell. Made from broken agricultural machinery, old garden tools and even dentist’s equipment the exhibition includes a rusty Belling heater which becomes a bee and an old farmer’s plough is transformed into a huge helicopter called a ‘Helicopterix’.
Serena said: “I hope you will enjoy this exhibition of insects and monsters, satirical, sad, and ridiculous. These were saved from the scrap heap. They were made by the great unsung engineers and blacksmiths of Sussex. It is fun to guess what makes up each sculpture.”
To add another twist Serena is the great great granddaughter of the famous Victorian Pre-Raphaelite artist Sir Edward Burne-Jones. However, Serena is more influenced by artists such as Picasso and Marcel Duchamp.
